What happened to Germanys U-boats after World War II? After Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945, the Allies captured more than 150 submarines. Most were destroyed during Operation Deadlight, when the Royal Navy towed them into the Atlantic and deliberately sank them.
But three of Germanys most advanced Type XXI Elektroboote never made it that far. Trapped inside Hamburgs massive Elbe II submarine bunker, they were buried beneath thousands of tons of concrete when the British demolished the structure.
Today, a parking lot sits above them, and the submarines are still there.
