Beneath Midtown Manhattan lies a sealed pedestrian tunnel most New Yorkers have never seen. Built in 1910, the Gimbels Passage once funneled thousands of commuters directly from Penn Station into the basement of the legendary Gimbels department store. Designed during the City Beautiful era by Daniel Burnham, the tunnel was a bold experiment in blending mass transit with retail powerone that quietly shaped a retail war with R.H. Macy & Co. above ground.
But after the demolition of the original Penn Station and the collapse of Midtown retail, the passage took a darker turn. Crime, neglect, and a notorious 1991 incident forced its permanent closure, turning a crown jewel of urban planning into a forbidden corridor. Today, despite a proposed $100 million revival, the tunnel remains sealedits fate tied to stalled skyscraper projects and impossible infrastructure costs.
Whats left down there now? And why has reopening this short stretch of tunnel proven so difficult? This episode uncovers the forgotten story of New Yorks most infamous abandoned pedestrian tunnel.
