In today’s episode of Kult America Ryan Socash visits the infamous Przemyśl Fortress (Twierdza Przemyśl). Przemyśl fortress (Polish: Twierdza Przemyśl) was a series of fortifications constructed at Przemyśl by the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the mid 19th century until the First World War. It was constructed in sections, depending on the diplomatic relations between Austria and the Russian Empire, and saw extensive combat during World War I. Originally captured by the Russian Army, it was recaptured by the German Army in mid 1915. I once knew the owner of an English school in a small Polish village and she once told me a disturbing story. She claimed that her business was almost destroyed because she had a Halloween party the previous year. Basically, the local priest told his perish that anyone who attended the school was a heretic and that all saints day was the only thing real christians could observe. I was confused because Halloween is about eating candy and dressing up, no American I had ever met treated it as a religious day, it had nothing in common with All saints day. A few years later I was invited to Polskie Radio Jedynka to debate a priest on the topic, when I told him that for me ghosts and monsters are fictional he exclaimed that for satanist they are real, which was probably one of the most ridiculous things I had ever heard. Anyways, the truth is that I don’t believe most Polish people would believe that Halloween had anything to do with religion, but to be sure, I hit the streets to ask people directly their feelings on the matter. LOT Flight 5055 was an Ilyushin Il-62M of LOT Polish Airlines that crashed in the late morning hours of Saturday, May 9, 1987. The event happened in the Kabaty Woods nature reserve on the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland. The flight prepared to leave Warsaw to San Francisco International Airport via New York City's John F. Kennedy International airport when it encountered multiple catastrophic events with the numbers 1 and 2 engines as well as the elevator shortly after departure. All 183 passengers and crew on board perished in the crash. The monastery was built in around 1739 from local sandstone but only thirty three years later it was burned to the ground, It was rebuilt but it never regained anything like its former glory. Another fire in 1822 destroyed the roof and the Carmelites finally gave up, baulking at the expense of rebuilding yet again. A part of the temple equipment was sent to the Parish Church in Zagórz, where it is kept to the present day. In 18th century on the east side of building was a hospital for war veterans and In 1957 Karol Wojtyła visited those reminants of the monastery. I remember the first anniversary of September 11th, one year after the horrific terrorist attack took place in New York city. I was in Nowy Targ Poland at the time, visiting with a friend. She switched to show me a tribute that Polish fire fighters were giving to American fire fighters. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing, a group of Polish fire fighters were singing the American national anthem. I was so touched by their gesture and impressed by how powerfully people could unite in the eyes of tragedy. We all know the story of the great american dream, a land of people who traveled from far away places to enjoy equal opportunity, allowing them to reach their highest goals and aspirations. Well, this concept is beautiful indeed, my own american dream was far from reality, a truth that sent me exploring the world. I wasn’t sure what I would find, but I knew that things could be better. Ten years later, I’m living comfortably as a citizen of Poland, with two kids, a wife, a job, and a car. Basically, what most people here call my European dream. And its a funny thing being an immigrant, because even if you’ve never identified yourself with your native flag, thats all the locals sometimes see you to be. In my case American.
