Why were Polish troops ordered not to fight the Red Army when the Soviet Union invaded Poland on September 17, 1939?
With Polish forces already fighting Germany in the west, Commander-in-Chief Edward Rydz-Śmigły ordered troops to avoid combat with Soviet forces unless attacked or threatened with disarmamentand instead withdraw toward Romania and Hungary.
It wasnt an order to surrender. It was an attempt to preserve Polish forces so they could escape the collapsing front and continue the war abroad.
But the Red Army moved to cut off escape routes, capture and disarm Polish units, while Polish forces did resist in several places - including Grodno.
And at Lwów, Soviet promises would have devastating consequences.
