Were Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union actually allies when they divided Poland in 1939?
The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was formally a non-aggression agreement, not a conventional military alliance. But its secret protocol divided Eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence and provided for the partition of Poland.
Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. The Soviet Union invaded from the east on September 17. Their armies fought separate campaigns, but their governments had already agreed on spheres of influence and subsequently formalized the partition of Poland.
So whether historians call the relationship an alliance, partnership or collaboration, one thing isnt disputed: Germany and the Soviet Union cooperated in dismantling the Polish state.
But if both invaded Poland, why did Britain and France declare war on Germanyand not the Soviet Union?
