A massive flying aircraft carrier, capable of launching and recovering airplanes in mid-air. It was designed to give the United States Navy an unprecedented advantage in reconnaissance and military operations.
But beneath its impressive size and groundbreaking technology were serious flaws.
In April 1933, during a violent storm off the coast of New Jersey, the USS Akron was lost in the Atlantic Ocean.
Only three men survived.
So why is the USS Akron disaster far less known than the Hindenburg?
