Why did the United States destroy thousands of its own World War II aircraft after the war?
By 1945, the U.S. had built nearly 300,000 military aircraft, but maintaining such an enormous fleet in peacetime was simply too expensive.
At places like Kingman Army Airfield in Arizona, thousands of iconic bombers - including the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator - were dismantled using a giant steel guillotine. Much of the aluminum was then recycled to help fuel Americas post-war economic boom.
Sometimes victory meant destroying the very machines that had won the war.
