In 1892, a broke prospector named Edward Doheny struck oil in the middle of downtown Los Angeles, and the city never recovered. Within a few years, hundreds of wells were pumping crude beneath the same streets where Angelenos were trying to build homes, schools, and shopping districts. Nobody wanted to live inside an oil field, but the companies owned what was underground and had no plans to leave. So Los Angeles came up with a uniquely Californian solution: hide the rigs in plain sight.
This episode uncovers the disguised oil derricks still scattered across LA today, from a synagogue facade on Pico Boulevard and a windowless six-story office building with no roof, to a flower-covered tower at Beverly Hills High and a derrick dressed as a dragon at a childrens amusement park. We trace how wells ended up beneath golf courses and the Beverly Center mall, and how one hidden site near USC sparked a public health fight that ended only in 2026. It is part clever urban planning, part quiet scandal, all buried under sixty years of beige stucco. #ItsHistory #LosAngeles #OilHistory
