Did the US military really have ice cream ships during World War II? The answer is yes, and they spent millions to make it happen.
During WWII, American military leaders considered ice cream more than just a dessert. It was seen as a powerful morale booster and a reminder of life back home for troops serving thousands of miles away.
To keep sailors supplied, the United States Navy converted a concrete barge into a floating ice cream factory in the Pacific. The vessel could produce hundreds of gallons of ice cream per shift and store roughly 1,500 gallons, supplying ships across the fleet.
And the Navy wasnt alone.
American bomber crews found their own way to make ice cream. By placing ice cream mix in cold, unheated sections of aircraft during high-altitude missions, they used freezing temperatures and engine vibrations to churn fresh ice cream while flying.
While soldiers on the front lines often survived on K-rations, the US military believed morale mattered, and few things boosted morale like a taste of home.
So yes, the United States really did have an ice cream ship during World War II, making ice cream one of the strangest tools of wartime morale.
