Yes this really happened, and The Chronicles of Narnia didnt invent it. When World War II broke out in 1939, the British government launched Operation Pied Piper, evacuating over one million people mostly children from major cities like London, Liverpool, and Birmingham. The fear was mass civilian casualties once German bombing began.
Children were sent by train to rural towns and villages and billeted with families they had never met. Some were welcomed warmly and experienced a safe, even happy childhood in the countryside. Others werent so lucky facing neglect, exploitation, or deep homesickness.
While evacuation peaked during the Blitz in 1940, it continued in waves throughout the war as bombing patterns shifted. For many children, evacuation became one of the defining experiences of wartime Britain protective, disruptive, and emotionally complex.
So yes British children really were sent to live with strangers. Sometimes it looked like Narnia. Often, it didnt.
