Did German soldiers really ride into battle on top of tanks like the Soviets did?
Yes but nowhere near as often.
German doctrine expected Panzergrenadiers to fight from half-tracks, not tank hulls. But production shortages, muddy roads, and rushed deployments meant that many units ended up improvising. When trucks couldnt keep up or half-tracks were unavailable, infantry clambered onto Panzers from the Eastern Front to Normandy.
Tank-riding was risky: men on top silhouetted themselves to enemy fire, limited the crews vision, and often didnt dismount until combat had already begun. So while it did happen, it never became the standard tactic the Red Army relied on.
