You know that feeling. Youre sitting somewhere. Kitchen table. Coffee. Someone says something that makes you pause for a second. Not some big insight. Just one of those dry, almost too simple lines. And still you think, yeah. Thats actually how it works.
I had that recently with this question. What is a friend, really. Not the LinkedIn version. Not the always there for you cliché. The real version. The one that sticks when life gets messy. And then I heard this.
A friend is someone who agrees to grow with you. Not complicated. Not spiritual.
Just very practical. You take yourself seriously. I take myself seriously. You work on your stuff. I work on mine. And somewhere along the way we help each other. Thats it.
And honestly. That feels way more realistic than all those romantic ideas about friendship. Because sometimes it sucks. Sometimes you show up more than the other person. Sometimes it flips. But as long as youre both trying to grow, it stays real.
Same thing with relationships by the way. And with a community. Sounds big, but the pattern is the same. Two people, or ten, or a hundred saying, were going to try. Not perfectly. Not always neatly. But honestly. And if it goes well, we walk out better than we walked in.
And I think thats actually a nice metric. Not whether something lasts. Not whether you talk every day. Not whether you keep everything smooth. But whether you come out a better version of yourself. If thats the case, then it was a real friendship. Or relationship. Or team. Or whatever.
Its almost too simple to be true. But yeah. Those things usually are.
