His name was Witold Pilecki. In 1940, this Polish resistance officer volunteered to be imprisoned in Auschwitz. His mission: build an underground network, gather intelligence, and alert the Allies to Nazi atrocities.
For over two years, Pilecki endured starvation, torture, and executions yet managed to organize resistance inside the camp and smuggle out detailed reports of what was happening there. His Witolds Report became one of the earliest eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust.
He escaped in 1943 only to be executed by Polands postwar communist regime for treason.
