When Britain quit India in 1947, it looked like a moral awakening a noble retreat from empire.
In reality, it was desperation and pressure.
By 1945, Britain was economically wrecked. The war had left the empire broke, rationing was still in effect, and the government was running on U.S. loans. Holding India meant maintaining troops and administration the country could no longer afford.
Meanwhile, India itself was erupting. The Quit India movement, naval mutinies, and mounting unrest made continued control impossible. The empire wasnt given up it collapsed under its own weight.
