Skirts may seem harmlessbut in the postwar era, they sparked real protests.

In 1947, Christian Diors New Look replaced wartime austerity with padded hips, tiny waists, and long skirts. Many loved the glamour, but feminists and working women protested. To them, Diors designs sent a message: women should go back to being delicate, decorative, domestic.

Fast forward to the 1960s, and it was the miniskirt causing outragethis time from conservatives and church groups. For young women, however, the miniskirt was a symbol of liberation, not indecency.

Fashion wasnt just fabricit was politics, gender, and identity.
