On June 17, 1831, the Best Friend of Charleston became the first locomotive in the U.S. to suffer a boiler explosion. The blast was caused by the fireman, whoannoyed by the sound of the safety valvereportedly placed a heavy log on it and sat down to silence the whistle. This blocked the valve, causing the boiler pressure to rise beyond safe limits. The explosion killed the fireman and sent metal fragments flying, while the engineer, Nicholas Darrell, escaped unharmed.
