Jego pierwszy syn (z żoną Jane Mitchum) zginął w 1973 roku w wypadku samochodowym, drugi (z żoną Myrą Lewis) utonął w 1962 roku.

Niewiele brakowało, a zmarłby na przepuklinę żołądka w 1981 roku.
