From Graduate to CEO in China

Mr. Duan Yongping went to Zhejiang University in 1978, majored in Wireless Electronics Engineering. After his graduation, he worked in Beijing for a while and then obtained a master degree in Econometrics from Renmin University.

After that, Mr. Duan started his career as an entrepreneur in South China in 1989. Ten years later, he achieved great success in building up two of the most famous brands in China ¨C Subor ( Xiao Ba Wang) and BBK ( Bu Bu Gao) and became a young hero of business in China.

Mr. Duan was CEO of Subor Electronics Industry Corporation in China from1989-1995. When he first joined Subor, it was only a factory with fewer than 20 workers and managers, with debt of 2 million RMB and only cash of 3,000 RMB. Starting from there, Mr.Duan made Subor the leading manufacturer of "learning computers" and game machines in China and gained as much as 100 million profit a month at the heyday of 1994-1995.

He left Subor in 1995 and founded BBK electronics. BBK carved out 20% market share of DVD players' market in China in the last three years and it is also a leading brand in telephone and stereo market in China.

Mr. Duan believed in the philosophy of credit for his business. "Tricks are not useful at all for long term creditability, and advertisements of BBK are all strictly true without exaggeration or ambiguity."

When asked about his life object, he said, the most impressive experience during the preparation for College Entrance Examination has taught him that he should "enjoy life" of a struggling procedure for an explicit goal. "Therefore, I should always try to figure out a goal for my colleagues to keep them interested and active in their jobs and share my joy". He has "retired" from actual management and confided the business to his colleagues who are about ten years younger than him, who is now 42. "I actually promoted my CEOs when they were under 30." He said confidently, "I really like them to behave independently and have a sense of success themselves."

"I am never afraid of follow others. Actually my business has never been an initiator of an industry. Instead, we analyze vulnerability of the leading companies in a certain industry and then try to establish our own stronghold. I will only enter industries where we will become top 2 in two years."

For more than two hours, Mr. Duan shared his numerous experiences in his college and MBA study, transitions from different companies, management method such as credit system for his wholesale clients, his unique view on market analysis and his optimistic prospects of what WTO will bring to BBK. The entire seminars were accompanied by applauses and laughs, and even after the official end of the seminar, audience were still discussing with him his recent success in investing on the stock of netease.com.
