This is the note Grant scribbled on the back of an envelope.  It appears he thought he might be required to make an appeal to the public to help find Laura.

It's hard to read, so here is a transcript of the part I thought was most interesting.

This is the note Grant wrote giving custody of his three children to his parents.  It is signed by both Amanda and himself.  (Sorry I didn't think to link that, but below is the transcript as the detective read the note.

Here is the picture of one of the towels from today.  I wanted to mention this because I read a media report about a 'bloody' towel.

The media is mistaken--according to court this afternoon, the towel is not bloody.  It was burgundy until someone poured bleach on it.

Think Arias. It seems to be all the rage now-a-days.  Murder someone, gather everything up and toss it in the washer, pour in a little bleach, and viola! law enforcement can't catch you.  (Except, sometimes they do.)  LOL

The top picture is one of three mats they found in the trash.  I added the bottom picture to show where at least one of them appears to have been positioned in the home.

I find it a little bit strange, I don't know why they threw them out.

 The note he wrote for his future tv appearance to plea for her return really got to me. And here I thought Jodi had innoculated me against shock at the things people will do to get away with murder. That note was so inhumane for some reason.

These are some of Grant's Facebook messages that were read in court today.  I posted the first one full size, but the others you can click on their thumbnails to read.

I tried to put them in order of their date and times.  (The times are shown on them but it is 4 hours behind the time shown, I think.)  The first message is from the 13th of July--the last day Laura was alive.  The thumbnails are from the last two days before he was arrested.  (He was arrested around 1:00 am of the 25th.)

It's pretty disgusting to read how he asked people for their prayers, and blamed everything on Laura--and now we know he new exactly where she was, because he had put her there.  Or, at the very least, helped.

That note was intended not only to disassociate himself from Laura's murder but also to make her look bad, and to elicit sympathy for himself. It just shows how sick and twisted his mind is. He is a horrible imitation of a human being.

I agree.  There is really something about that note and some of his Facebook messages that show pretty much his true colors; and it's not a pleasant sight.

I can still see the picture of Laura I posted this morning with her baby's little chubby fist holding tight to her bathing suit strap, and it just breaks my heart.

This is so sad and so unnecessary, that it makes me want to cry.

I went back to the video of Sha's testimony and she identified both vacuums--the deep red one belonged to her now husband.

The prosecutor that gave the opening statement told us to watch for where Sha's vacuum was found.  Now I'm wondering if I missed it.  There just can't be that much left to come.  The judge is going to send the case to the jury if they don't finish pretty soon.  LOL

I have no idea when the defense is going to present their case.  I hope they planned on keeping it short.

Anyway, if I don't get out of here I'll be late in the morning.  (And the judge might have the trial finished before I get up.)

Thanks for the clarification on the vacuum, Nan.  If the yellow one was really broken, I'm not surprised it was thrown away (I've thrown away more than one that was broken).  But I'm wondering if they found something interesting in the bag (vacuumed up evidence?).  If not, why even bring it up?

I hate to say this, but my concern about this case is that I haven't heard anything about a murder weapon, or cause of death (both apparently undetermined), or seen any proof that Grant actually committed the murder.  Circumstantially, it looks like he did it, but I can see how there's reasonable doubt that Amanda could have done it, if she had a grudge against Laura, too, even though there's been no evidence (yet) of that. I would hate to see this guy walk, but I'm not sure the prosecution has proved it beyond a reasonable doubt.  I almost think he'd have a better chance of being convicted if they had been tried together, or if Amanda's trial had happened first. But there's still more to come, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Welp, we don't know that it was really broken when originally thrown out.  If it is not working now, that could have happened since it was placed in the garbage.

And I'm hoping I didn't miss the introduction of the maroon one, so there may still be one to come.  Since at least this one was important enough to be mentioned in opening statements, maybe there will be something in it--if not the yellow one.  IDK

Yes, we are not going to see a murder weapon or hear a cause of death.  They found Laura's remains--there is no doubt she was murdered.

The prosecutors have shown motive, means, and opportunity.  There is no smoking gun--no eyewitness; not enough left of the person they murdered to determine the how of it.  But that it happened has been proven.

There is a ton of circumstantial evidence.  The jury should not overlook that.

That being said, I would like to read the charging document for Mr. Hayes.  I agree that it benefited the defense of both Amanda and Grant to have separate trials--because what this really was is two people who conspired together to commit an unthinkable murder.  Only one hand wield the weapon, but they were partners in everything else.  imo

Here is Mr. Wolfe's article.  He answered one question of mine--the mats in the living room of the apartment only matched the bath mats.  The ones found in the trash appear to be smaller, so from the bathroom.

RALEIGH — When news from Texas led local TV stations to report he and his wife were already arrested, Grant Hayes exited his parents’ house in Kinston and began chain-smoking.

An identical pair of the boxer-briefs was shown in a photo taken at Grant Hayes’ parents’ residence during the search of the house by RPD Detective Zeke Morse.

He also sent Ackerson a message the day before she vanished saying she should possibly take the children, because he was only allowed custody while staying in North Carolina, and said he couldn’t make a living in the state.

By the end of the Monday court session, she hadn’t said she found evidence of blood in the bathroom. She returns to the stand today.

I do know this is a silly question, but they showed 2 brushes that were found in their garbage yesterday. They were gray and all twisted (from over use...or scrubbing?). We're they vacuum brushes?

Morning, Summertime!  They appeared more like old fashioned scrubbing brushes, possibly some of them even had short wooden handles. I think the kind powered by elbow grease.

I agree that the 'twist' came from scrubbing and overuse.

Nan, thanks for your comments on evidence against Grant. I agree that they've shown motive, means, and opportunity, and that they both had a hand in this. I hope they are both found guilty.

I've searched and searched for the charges against Grant, but all I can find is that he's charged with murder. I guess we'll have to wait until the judge goes over them with the jury.

Raleigh, N.C. — Months before her death two years ago, Laura Ackerson expressed concerns about her safety to the Kinston lawyer she hired to represent her in a custody battle with her ex-boyfriend, Grant Hayes, over their young sons who were in his care, the attorney said Tuesday in Hayes' first-degree murder trial.

We had a conversation that she not put herself in a situation where she would be alone with him," John Sargeant told jurors of the March 2011 conversation with the 27-year-old Ackerson, whom Wake County prosecutors say Hayes killed July 13, 2011, in his Raleigh apartment after inviting her for a rare mid-week visit with the children.

By the time of their conversation that spring, Sargeant said, Ackerson had received the results of a court-ordered psychological evaluation and was optimistic that she might get, at a minimum, split custody of her boys, who were in the primary care of their father and whom she only saw on weekends.

"She believed he was starting to get desperate. She believed the evaluation was going her way, and she believed Mr. Hayes knew the evaluation was not going his way," Sargeant said.

A marked-up copy of a report on that evaluation, police investigators testified Monday, was found in Hayes' SUV after his arrest, and prosecutors say it was the custody case that led him to plan her death, cover it up by dismembering her body and dump her remains in a Richmond, Texas, creek.

Raleigh, N.C. — A psychologist who performed a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation on both Laura Ackerson and Grant Hayes as part of an ongoing child custody dispute testified Wednesday in Hayes' murder trial that, despite allegations that Ackerson was mentally unstable, she made no such findings but did suggest that he be further evaluated.

"It's recommended that Grant be referred to a psychiatrist for evaluation regarding the question of a mood disorder or other possible explanations for the illogical, disturbed thinking that he exhibits," Ginger Calloway read from her May 16, 2011, analysis in which she also recommended Hayes and Ackerson split custody of their 2- and 3-year-old sons.

"He already had it planned out what he was going to do," Pablo Trinidad, now serving 21 years in federal prison on drug charges, told jurors late Wednesday afternoon in the first-degree murder trial of Grant Hayes.

Ginger Calloway saw just what kind of a mother Ackerson was when she observed her and her son Gentle together just months before her death.

“She was very attentive to him and was sort of going with what he wanted in the room,” Calloway said.

Nan, thank you for all the great posts.  I missed this afternoon's testimony, so I missed the inmate testifying that Grant confessed to him.  Thanks for posting the links so I can go back and watch it!

Totally agree, here, CP! Of course, that was back in the day before they started the he did--no--she did game. They are not speaking so highly of one another currently. I guess the honeymoon stage has ended.

Now Miss Amanda is saying he even dared to threaten her life, in a letter exchanged while in jail--or some such allegation. It will be interesting to see if hard evidence of the threat surfaces during her trial.

 I wish I could get a clearer screen shot of this, but it is really hard to read even when blown up full screen.  The solid black lines indicate where the saw was used.  You can go to about 34:14 at this video and see it as they showed it in court today.

Radisch, the state's chief medical examiner, testified Thursday that she found some evidence of possible strangulation as well as a puncture wound in the neck at the fourth vertebra of the spine

But she said because of the conditions of the remains she couldn't determine for certain if Ackerson had been strangled to death or stabbed to death.

"My final conclusion was that I didn't have enough information with the parts we received to determine the exact cause of death," she said. "I called it undetermined homicidal violence."

On cross-examination though, she added that, at the time of the autopsy, she was not aware that a Texas medical examiner had crushed Ackerson' thyroid cartilage, which was the basis for her finding of possible strangulation.

Another courtroom shocker happened right before Berry took the stand for the defense. The prosecution wrapped its case with Walmart video of Grant Hayes buying a reciprocating saw at 2 a.m., and a hate song written about Ackerson called "Broomstick Rider."

As the music played, Hayes leaned back to watch the lyrics on the big screen and even rocked to the beat.

In another setback for the defense just before the trial wrapped for the day, Berry, who earlier said Amanda admitted "hurting Laura Ackerson bad" testified that Amanda later nodded her head when asked if she was just covering for Grant Hayes.

Berry will be back on the stand Friday morning.

RALEIGH -- Before the state rested in the Grant Hayes murder trial on Thursday, the jury listened to a song he wrote about the custody battle between him and Laura Ackerson.

Hayes moved to the beat of his song "Broomstick Rider" as it played in the courtroom. The song outlines the bitter custody battle between him and Ackerson.

The chorus of the song says, “Baby Mama, don't want your drama, I've got two kids by you can't take anymore from you.”

It was never released but included a warning to the young mother.

“You must have told your attorney I got intentions on killing you. What? Might stop me, but my bullets will get you soon,” Hayes raps on the track.

Another song Hayes wrote, “Man Killer,” also featured disturbing lyrics illustrating a scenario of him choking someone.

“Don't raise your arms, you can't stop me, I'll put my hands on your throat and squeeze,” the lyrics read.
