There's no telling how long the black dog had been in a Madera Ranchos orchard.

Its coat was matted.

It had scabies.

Something was wrong with its tail.

Some took compassion, and stopped to feed it.

Others expressed concern in posts about the dog on Facebook.

"People will say 'Hey, there's a dog.' But they won't stop. That dog is out there. If it's freezing, raining. They don't deserve that. I go out there and get them help," said Megan Bowe, who picked up the dog Friday, off road 30 1/2 and Avenue 11.

Bowe took the one-year-old dog, a German Shepherd, to a veterinarian.

She also gave it a name: King.

"King is in the worst condition I've seen. I've seen dogs as skinny as him, but they didn't have the mange. That's what makes it so severe," says Bowe, who runs Bowe's Adoptable Rescued Pups.

A veterinarian told her King's tail needs to be amputated, because it is severely infected.

She is now raising money to help cover King's medical expenses-- they already top $500.

"I like to help animals. I feel like it's something I should do," says Bowe, who expressed frustration over people who dump animals in rural areas. "They don't deserve that."

The goal is to get King healthy enough to be ready for a new forever home.

Bowe has rescued close to 30 dogs so far.
