Solarz, M.W. (ed.): Atlas of Poland’s Political Geography. Poland in the Modern World: 2022 Perspective2020 •
This paper deals with the role of social sciences, and more specifically of geography and regional planning, in the legitimization of European integration and neo-liberal economic and social reforms introduced since 1989 in Poland and, more broadly, in post-communist Central and Eastern Europe. Using the example of an intellectual biography of Antoni Kukliński, one of the most prominent Polish geographers, the role of the old intelligentsia elite and its American professional experiences in the evolution of the Polish academia is also analyzed, as well as its involvement in the first noncommunist government. The paper also discusses the absence of critical schools within the field of Polish geography as well as other disciplines of social sciences. This is done though the reconstruction of the basic structure of the given academic field and its evolution over time from late communist period to present days. This specific structure of the field of Polish geography, which as it is argued is similar to other fields of social sciences and humanities in Poland, also helps to better contextualize the trajectory of Kukliński.

The geopolitics of territorial relativity. Poland seen by Rudolf KjellénRudolf Kjellén (1864–1922) discusses the birth, death, and possible rebirth of the state as a ‘living organism’. His concept of the nation, based on Renan, as a voluntary community is linked to the attainment of statehood. Poland is an example in this discussion, beginning in his book Stormakterna – The Great Powers – in 1905, with the nation under subjugation by three of these powers, continuing with his Staten som lifsform in 1916 where the possibility of rebirth is in sight, and finalized in 1920 in questioning the future of the world geopolitical order. His writings also include statements on the vulnerability of borders, the need for domestic autarky, and, on the problems of territorial autonomy, discussions of importance for the post-World War I geopolitical history of Poland; but these have mostly been neglected by post-World War II discourses. The aim of this article is to analyse how Poland's geopolitical situation is reflected in the viewpoints of Rudolf Kjellén agains...

After the years of silence and after avoidance of geopolitical researches and its subdisciplines, a renascence of his knowledge has come out. In the latest past years, we can notice a conspicuous increase of interest in nearly all kinds of researches, which are made by political geographers including people who deal with geostrategical and geopolitical problems. When we talk about Poland we must say that the increased interest is a result of breaking a kind of taboo taboo, which refereed to the works of this sphere. Firstly, that the works were connected with the Third Reich polities and propaganda, and secondly, because of the easy way of censorship explanation, very common while making controversial studies in Poland during communistic times. The past ten years were abounding in accidents connected with boarder's changes and changes of geopolitical and geostrategical circumstances. Also, this is a period of time when the USSR fell into pieces, the European Community came into ...

That Polish ‘Western thought’ emerged in response to German Ostforschung is a main thesis of this very extensive work by Gernot Briesewitz. In it there is also a strong signal that this kind of context cannot to even the slightest extent relativise or justify the entanglement of German Ostforschung in the National Socialism of the Third Reich. The author offers a penetrating analysis of the evolution of Polish Western thought, showing how it reacted to a changing political situation as one stage following Poland’s regaining of independence in 1918 followed another, through the inter-War period and then the Second World War, up until the time the communist authorities came to power. The author does not explain this last hiatus in any more incisive or clear-cut way, but would seem to link it to the advent of the ‘Stalinisation’ process. In a fundamental sense, Briesewitz’s work encompasses a longer period than the years 1918-1948, given that work by Wacław Nałkowski and Eugeniusz Rome...
